Deportation of dangerous foreigners doubled in 2017

Data from the General Directorate of Migration indicate that effective deportations of dangerous foreigners increased by 60%, after it went from 393 cases to 620 effective deportations.

According to Esteban Obando, deputy director of Migration, during the last year the operations increased by 150%, while the migratory refusals grew by 12%.

For example, national authorities account for 12,085 rejections in 10 months. People failed to meet the requirements to enter the country in all those cases. However, in 2016 there were 10,732 rejections.

At the moment, of the 620 people on the deportation list, 50 people are still waiting for the last stage of the measure.

Most of them come from countries such as El Salvador, Nicaragua and Colombia. The authorities have identified 106 people linked to organized crime.

This year, the Government made the decision to expel all foreigners who represented a risk for national security. This happened after the murder of the Canadian Elias Akl at the entrance of an educational center in Escazú.

In the balance sheet of the migration authorities, the rejection of 71 sex offenders identified at an international level stands out. Most of them have a history of sexual assault on minors.
In this field, the country also reported an increase of 15%, since 2016 closed with 67 rejections for these reasons.
