On Thursday, several diplomats left a UN meeting on drugs in Vienna for the presence of Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza, whom they deem an illegitimate representative of the country.
Dozens of representatives from Latin American countries but also from the United States, Canada and some European countries, including France, left the room when Arreaza started his intervention during a meeting of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) in Vienna.
The members of the Venezuelan delegation that are here today represent the illegitimate government of Nicolás Maduro and therefore cannot be considered as speaking on behalf of the Venezuelan people,”
stated a spokesman for the US mission to the organizations after the incident.
More than fifty countries have recognized the opposition leader Juan Guaidó as interim president.
Several Latin American and European diplomats had already left last month when Arreaza spoke to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva and called for direct talks between Maduro and US President Donald Trump to address the crisis in the country.
