Dota municipality uses technology to become Carbon Neutral

Dota municipality has a fixed goal: to become a carbon neutral canton and an example for the rest of the country.

According to Mayor Leonardo Chacón, they are already measuring emissions in the area, which has 83% of the protected territory.

Authorities have signed agreements to reduce the use of agrichemicals and Coopedota already produces a carbon neutral coffee. Moreover, Dota has one of the highest percentages of recycling nationwide (60% of its waste).

In addition, diverse ideas are on the table and solar panel “energy trees” are being developed with low-cost technology. According to Johan Brenes, one of the developers, charging each tree requires an investment of 52,000 colones.

This proposal will create an area of technology in public spaces. For example, in the park, the idea is to enable a free internet area with energy trees that allow citizens to recharge their mobile devices with clean energy.

All the proposals would be embodied in a mobile application that would be linked to the best tourist destinations that make the Aromas and Flavors route. This area is famous for its coffee exports and it also has a high tourism potential, which is reflected in the app that will be available from December.
