After the Conservationist Federation of Costa Rica (FECON) denounced the Government for an alleged violation of the Decree that prohibits the importation of an agrochemical called bromacil, the concern of ecologists has increased, since they don’t know the way the agrochemical will be discarded by the State Phytosanitary Service.
According to Fabián Pacheco, representative of FECON, bromacil has highly polluting organic compounds that would not only cause harm to the environment, but to the population. According to the scientific studies provided by FECON, toxic compounds could lodge in the fatty tissues of living beings and could spread over long distances.
Faced with this concern, the Phytosanitary Service clarified that they are not considering the incineration of bromacil and that they are in negotiations with the Ministry of Environment and Energy on the best way to get rid of the product that arrived in the country on June 7th to Caldera and that is currently in the hands of customs.
Gerardo Suárez Aguiar, Manager of Agricenter SA (the company that made the purchase), indicated that the company is studying the way to re-export the product, although the entrepreneur said that it might not be to the country of origin: China.
