Their courage, driven in most cases by lacks and obstacles in life, makes them move on with their family.
That is why on September 21, from 8:00 am to 12 noon, a forum will be held at the Crowne Plaza Corobici Hotel. It is called “I’m the Hidden Face of Development”, which aims to show how thousands of women, owners of small businesses, stimulate Costa Rican economy, keep their houses going, provide education to their children, are heads of the family or a great support for their husbands and their loved ones.
According to the latest Household Survey (2015), Costa Rican population is made up of 2,483,529 women (51%) and 2,350,223 (49%) men. There are 1,462,135 households with an average of 3.3 people per house. 36% of them is led by women, it means 526,369 households, representing a coverage of 1,737,016 people.
It is important to say that one in every 5 women works more than 48 hours a week, either as an employee or managing her business, without taking into account the time dedicated to the care of the house and education of her children. A relevant fact is that according to a survay conducted by INEC-UNA-INAMU, women spend 37 hours per week in unpaid housework and men only spend 15.5 hours.
Now, in terms of free time, INEC Survey on time use reveals that women spend five less hours in leisure time than men.
It is estimated that the income that women bring home is around 457 million dollars annually. However, quantifying the real impact of small enterprises headed by women in society, would be modest, because there are many factors whose value goes beyond numbers, such as good parenting, children’s education, economic and emotional stability of their families. That value and impact can not be measured.
Characteristics of enterprising women:
-They are aged from 35 years old to 54 years old (52.30%);
-They didn’t finish high school (62.5%);
-They work alone (81.4%);
-They work in the service sector ( 39.4%); however, 54% of entrepreneurial trade activities are carried out by women.
