A new attempt to rule on the bill that seeks to legalize the medicinal use of marijuana stumbled on Tuesday in the Committee on Legal Affairs of the Legislative Assembly.
The members of the legislative panel were ready to approve a substitute text to the project, but they were unable to do so because of a motion filed by Óscar López, from the Accessibility without Exclusion Party (PASE).
López, who is part of the commission but almost never assists, showed up and asked to read the full reports of the project.
Faced with this request, the legislator Juan Luis Jiménez Succar, who chairs the commission, decided to adjourn because he felt it was physically impossible to read out the two texts.
Legislator Marvin Atencio, from the Citizen Action Party (PAC), promoter of the initiative, drew attention to the use of strategies to delay the project’s approval.
He urged lawmakers to make a decision, whatever this might be.
The initiative, which seeks to authorize the medicinal use of marijuana in Costa Rica, also faces at least 500 motions by Legislator Abelino Esquivel, from Costa Rican Renovation.
