On Sunday, the National Center for Energy Control (CENCE) activated its emergency protocols, due to partial failure in the electrical systems of the countries that make up the Electrical Interconnection System of the Central American Countries (SIEPAC).
The entity reported that several circuits of the National Electric System (SEN) went offline to ensure the safety of equipment and its own infrastructure and users.
The Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (ICE) and CENCE monitor the consequences of the event and are working to normalize the service.
For the distribution coverage areas of ICE there was a partial impact in the Chorotega Region (Las Cañas, La Virgen and Santa Rita), the Central Region (Naranjo, Alto Castro and Rosario) and the Huetar Caribe Region (Siquirres).
The clients of the CNFL that experienced power outages were in Alajuelita, El Llano, Tres Ríos, Goicoechea, Zapote and Desamparados, and in some sectors of San José.
The Central American countries are interconnected by SIEPAC, which allows transactions in the Central American Electricity Market (MER).
