This Wednesday, the University of Costa Rica (UCR) launched a campaign to ensure that the entire university community is not afraid to report cases of sexual harassment.
The UCR free of sexual harassment campaign seeks to empower the victims and promote the process of denouncing sexual harassment through talks, visual material, training, and workshops.
Patricia Mora, Minister of the Status of Women, said that the prevention and eradication of violence against women is one of the priorities and this is what is established in the decree just signed by the government.
In the labor and educational spheres, women continue to be the main victims of cases of sexual harassment.
According to the researcher at the Center for Research in Women’s Studies (CIEM), Monserrat Sagot, previous efforts have been made on a smaller scale, but this campaign also covers all regional offices.
We have stronger support to prevent and confront this problem. We already had the information that at least 20% of the female students had said they had received sexual harassment – mainly from teachers – at some point,”
said Sagot.
Henning Jensen, president of the UCR said that people who are going through a situation of this type in school can be sure that they have all their support.
The institution will use social networks to publish a “manual to identify a stalker”, which compiles a series of typical phrases that say or describe harassing. In addition, information about the complaint process will be distributed.
