Diseases such as skin cancer and spinal disc herniation are some of the main concerns of those working in the fishing industry. It often occurs due to negligence or ignorance.

As a result, the Costa Rican Fishing Federation (FECOP) convened a forum in which commercial, recreational and artisanal fishing  representatives will work together. They aim to reduce the risks suffered by those who practice these activities.

According to Alfredo Román, FECOP president, fishers expose themselves to other severe risks such as skin and muscle problems, cuts and bruises that are affecting their life quality.

According to Román, besides ignorance or negligence, regulations to guarantee the workers’ safety are being ignored. For instance, the Labor Code and the Fisheries Act indicate that each fisherman must have a medical review that enables the person to work in that area.

In addition, safety on vessels must be taken into account: a great quantity of boats have set sail without having the international requirements regarding radio communication equipment, which is essential to give warning in case of emergency.

For this reason , from September 7th to September 9th, in the San Lucas assembly room, in Puntarenas, a congress will be held: several experts will debate the recommendations that should be followed to improve fishing workers’ living conditions.
