Finance Ministry is asked to disclose the 69 names linked to Panama Papers

The National Association of Public and Private Employees (ANEP), as well as the Trade Union Patria Justa, asked the Ministry of Finance to disclose the names of the 69 Costa Rican people and/or companies investigated by that agency for allegedly being involved in the tax evasion scandal known as the “Panama Papers.”

“Society has the right to know who are those 69 individuals or corporations involved in such operations to evade taxes,” said Albino Vargas Barrantes, Secretary General of ANEP and Coordinator of Patria Justa.

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) revealed that individuals and companies evaded taxes by creating partnerships in tax havens, a scandal called “Panama Papers.”

Apparently, the tricks of these (…) tax thieves have acquired high levels of sophistication. However, the nature of the irregularities could go beyond evasion, to other more serious criminal acts,”

said Vargas.

The leader said that just as society has the right to know how much public-sector workers earn, the country must have the possibility to know this information regarding public funds.

Vargas asserted that it is important to know if some of the 69 investigated are

mega-corporations the news business, transformed into true media latifundium, promoters of a political-ideological agenda contrary to the common good.”

According to Vargas, the names of the lawyers and law firms that carried out the operations must also be made public.
