Fines for those who don’t pay garbage collection tax

July 11, 2016 by Staff News Writer

In order to lower tax defaulting for garbage collection, Mora’s Municipality announced a huge fine for those who take out the trash and don’t pay their taxes.

According to city authorities, the fine goes from 424,200 colones (a Judiciary basic salary) to 4.242 million colones (10 Judiciary basic salaries).

Mayor Gilberto Monge said that this measure is supported and protected by article 50, section B of 8839 Law (Law for Integrated Solid Waste Management) and it is applied in order to make citizens pay for the service they have received.

Nevertheless, this law is not only for delayed payments, those resources are intended to create a healthy environment for all residents of the county.

When citizens put their wastes on public roads, it is simply because they have paid authorities to collect them. If a citizen doesn’t pay the tax, that person can’t receive our services. They expect us to pick up their trash because of the environmental problems it creates for us if we don’t do it,

said the mayor.

Monge added that the institution is required by law to collect wastes on the street, but it is also empowered by law to punish citizens for dumping solid waste on public roads without paying an established fee.
