The Costa Rican Fire Department confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that the cause of Monday’s fire in Barrio Cuba was a failure in an electrical system. This was announced by the Engineering Unit of the Fire Department.
The data was obtained after analyzing different electrical components collected in the area. According to witnesses and firefighters, that’s what would have started the fire,” was the statement.
According to the relief body records, the failure of electrical systems has been the main cause of fires in Costa Rica for the last 15 years.
In total, 30 to 40 houses were consumed by the flames. According to Hector Cháves, general director of Firefighters, the type of material of the structures, such as cardboard and cans, it would have caused the flames to spread rapidly.
According to the director, they used 10 fire extinguishing units, approximately 100 firefighters to deal with the emergency, as well as volunteer personnel who arrived at the site.
Cháves added that the house that had the power failure was at the bottom of the El Pochote neighborhood sector, in Barrio Cuba.
Around 300 people, approximately 70 families, are housed in the local gymnasium to serve people affected by the accident.
