The fire department reported five victims of fires and a 43% increase in fire emergencies during this Holy Week, compared to 2017.
This year 1384 fire emergencies occurred throughout the country, against the 967 cases of the previous period.
The figures provided by the Emergency Dispatch Office of the Fire Department show that all emergencies grew by 26%: in total 2,628 emergencies were dealt with during 2018, compared to 2,080 in 2017.
Last week, firefighters controlled five forest fires in Isla de Chira, Santa Cruz, Costa de Pájaros and two in Pérez Zeledón.
The Fire Department registred five fatal victims in fires during the last days:
• March 24th, Liberia, San Roque, a 70-year old woman died in her home.
• March 24th, Buenos Aires, Puntarenas, a 17-year-old boy died in a scrublands fire.
• March 26th, San Rafael de Alajuela, a 17-year-old boy died as a result of an asphalt tank explosion.
• March 28th, Cartago, La Union, a 57-year-old man died under a bridge in a scrublands fire.
• March 28th, Palmares, Alajuela, a 55-year-old woman died at home.
