First case of Guillain Barre syndrome associated with zika in Costa Rica

The Ministry of Health of Costa Rica reported on Monday the first case of Guillain Barre syndrome associated with Zika in the country, detected in the coastal area of Jacó, where the main outbreak of the viral disease is concentrated.

An official statement specifies that the victim is a 14 year-old girl from Jacó, with a history of asthma and who suffered dengue a year ago.

According to health authorities, she experienced high temperatures, widespread rash and other symptoms of Zika between July 19th and 24th, after which her health improved.

On July 28th, the patient awoke in the morning with intense burning pain in the lower limbs which then went up the hips, with weakness and difficulty to walk and breathe,”

stated the report.

Both medical tests performed at the clinic and in a laboratory of the University of Costa Rica confirmed Guillain Barre syndrome.

So far this year, there have been 351 cases of Zika in Costa Rica, 119 of them concentrated in the area of Jacó, according to the latest report from the Ministry of Health, released on Wednesday.

There have also been 1,754 cases of chikungunya and dengue, 11,484, concentrated mostly in the coastal zone of the Pacific.
