Forensic services in the near future

In the Legislative Assembly, Puntarenas Especial Commission debated the possibility of providing a forensic medicine service in the South Area of the country. By doing so, users wouldn’t have to travel to San Joaquín de Flores in Heredia.

Zarela Villanueva, president of the Supreme Court, said that the Judiciary and The Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) are willing to provide the forensic medicine service; they even have a medical and technical staff ready to start operations. However, it is required to have the right conditions in the hospitals nearby.

As explained by the Executive Chief of the Judiciary, Ana Eugenia Romero, with the community’s support, it is possible to build a Regional Morgue in a piece of land donated by the Instituto de Desarrollo Rural. In addition, the Junta de Desarrollo de la Zona Sur (JUDESUR) would provide economic cooperation for the construction of the building and its equipment. Furthermore, Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y Arquitectos (CFIA) would draw a floor plan. The executive will contribute with the workforce and the staff.

The Regional Morgue would not only offer forensic services, but also clinical and pathological services related to workplace hazards, accidents, victims of violence, etc.

Walter Espinoza, OIJ’s director, said that this forensic center would benefit Quepos, Corredores, Golfito, Pérez Zeledón and Osa communities.
