Former presidents call for justice and support of nations in Venezuelan crisis

Former Costa Rican presidents Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, Rafael Ángel Calderón, Óscar Arias and Laura Chinchilla signed a petition letter of justice before the social and political crisis in Venezuela that has claimed the lives of 55 people.

They did it with 17 other former presidents of Latin American countries and Spain, also calling for the demonstration and support of the rulers of the Caribbean countries, which have not supported the Venezuelan people so far.

More than 13 thousand people have also been affected by injuries, 2,660 have been arrested, and 334 civilians have been subjected to military justice.

Venezuela is part of the Caribbean basin. Their democratic governments never hesitated to express their solidarity and willingness to cooperate with the Caribbean nations from their independence processes,”

cites the letter to ask for support to oppose the regime of Nicolás Maduro.

Today, in times of material hardship, restriction of freedoms and loss of fundamental rights in all areas, Venezuelans cannot but hope for the support of the peoples of the Caribbean and the governments that represent them, who have hitherto abstained.”

These messages and requests have been constant on behalf of former presidents in the last months, they even have asked the Costa Rican government to state a clear position regarding the situation in Venezuela, and to request the application of the Inter-American Charter of the Organization of American States.

President Luis Guillermo Solís said last week that Costa Rica has been firm in its positions, calling for respect for human rights and also for free elections as a democratic country.
