Having a good diet is vital to cope with the chemotherapy processes that cancer patients go through. Proper nutrition is vital from day one. Therefore, we will give you four tips to eat well if you are an oncological patient or are close to one.
- Yorleni Chacón, director of the Nutrition major in the Universidad Hispanoameericana (UH) explained that when the patient is receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy, they usually advise them to consume many nutrients or eat everything, which is a mistake, because the patient is feeding the cells that are strong, even in the early stages of treatment. The recommendation during therapy is to have a balanced diet, but not under the supervision of a specialist. Until the person does not have a computerized axial tomography (CAT) to learn about the state of cancer in his body, you cannot be hyper-feed with vitamins and minerals.
-The patients can not eat anything raw, for example cheese, lettuce, ceviche, raw seafood, salad, due to the vulnerable immune system. A contaminated molecule can enter the body and cause infectious disorders.
- The third myth is the idea that the person cannot consume orange or pineapple juice during chemo because it is too acidic and would cause gastritis. It all depends on the tolerance of the patient.
- It is not recommended that the patient have long periods of fasting despite vomiting and nausea. Weight loss should not be allowed and these discomforts can be relieved with crunchy or cold foods during the chemo session. For example: consume grapes or frozen watermelon.
