The canton of Garabito celebrated the month of the environment with the renewal of its commitment to sustainability, since the Municipality signed the agreement promoted by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) to reduce the use of single-use plastic.
With this agreement, the town of Garabito said “No more plastic!” and joined the National Strategy to replace the consumption of single-use plastics with renewable and compostable alternatives.
We take on this commitment because here we have some of the most affected communities in the route from Río Grande de Tárcoles in the Great Metropolitan Area. It is here, in this place, where we see the environmental impact caused by different cantons of the provinces of Cartago, Alajuela, Heredia, San José, and Puntarenas,”
said Tobías Murillo, mayor of Garabito.
This measure reinforces a series of strategies and initiatives that have been promoted from the Chamber of Commerce and Sustainable Tourism of the Central Pacific so that beaches such as Jacó, Herradura, Tárcoles, and Playa Azul become “green”.
According to Juan Chávez, president of the chamber, they proposed to make a strong campaign against the use of plastic, learning from the pioneers of the Chamber of Tourism of Osa.
Some of the green actions carried out by the chamber is the campaign “Without a straw, please,” strategic location of trash cans, planting almond trees on the beach, and conducting a reuse workshop.
Other entities involved in the agreement include the Costa Rican Surfing Association, and the Republic of Guyana School in Playa Azul.
