Gas and steam from Ricón de la Vieja fill the skies

A video published by the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) reduces three hours of intense gasification in Rincón de la Vieja Volcano to an 11-second clip.

The images were captured by the camera installed a few days ago, in a period from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. on Thursday.

The phenomena is visible through a vigorous plume of gases and water vapor. It is a normal process for an active volcano.

The volcano had several eruptions in recent months. The most recent occurred on October 10th, when there was an event that exceeded 500 meters above the crater at about 11:28 p.m.

Usually, the flows ejected by the volcano descend along the north flank towards Upala and the currents of hot mud are known as lahars.

According to an analysis made by OVSICORI in August, the eruptions originating in Rincón de la Vieja Volcano between May and June caused a considerable decrease of the crater’s lake.

The scientists explained that this behavior is due to the partial evaporation

due to the heat coming from the hydrothermal magmatic system that is under the lake.”
