Government enabled unofficial center for migrants in Peñas Blancas

The government asked the representatives of the Costa Rican Red Cross to take care of migrants in Deldú parking, where there are 1, 100 people who came through Peñas Blancas.

These citizens are not receiving comprehensive care and the place does not have adequate infrastructure or sanitary conditions, as confirmed by the Minister of Communication, Mauricio Herrera, who delegated this work to the Costa Rican Red Cross.

According to Herrera, the people who are there do not receive medical and technical assistance. For this reason, following the humanitarian policy of registration, it is better for the government to intervene.

Currently, there four care centers enabled for this population, two in Paso Canoas (Golfito and Buenos Aires) and two in Penas Blancas (Jobo and Las Vueltas).

Most migrants have a permit issued by the Directorate General of Immigration which lasts 25 days so they can regulate their situation and determine if they are deported or go their way.

Most of them are Haitian, but there are also people of Congo, Senegal, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Togo, Nepal, Bangladesh, Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Burkina Faso, India, South Africa and Sudan.

Herrera said that despite the demonstrations by representatives of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) and by taxi drivers, the same number of policemen stood at the borders.

Irregular migrants who are not subjected to immigration control, will be apprehended by the security forces and subjected to deportation process.
