Government intensifies negotiations for Costa Rica at the OIM

The government claimed it intensified the negotiation for votes to achieve the presidency of Costa Rican Laura Thompson in the Organism of the United Nations (UN) for the Migration (IOM).

Thompson, who is currently the deputy general director of this body, will face the American Ken Isaacs and Portuguese António Vitorino this Friday. She was reelected in 2014 for five years. Prior to this position, Thompson served as ambassador and permanent representative of Costa Rica to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva.

Vice president and chancellor Epsy Campbell said that for two weeks the director of Foreign Policy, Christian Guillermet traveled to Geneva, Switzerland, to support the ambassador to the UN agencies, Elaine White, in the negotiation with the 169 member countries of this forum.

Costa Rica formally presented Thompson’s candidacy in this organization last November.

The IOM was founded in 1951 and deals with the problem of migration. Currently, the secretary general of the organization is William L. Swing.
