Government of Nicaragua announces release of arrested demonstrators

The government of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega agreed on Wednesday to release all the demonstrators arrested in a maximum of 90 days, which allowed to resume the dialogue with the opposition, suspended after the repression against demonstrators last weekend.

The government’s decision puts an end to a stalemate in the negotiations, from which the opposition withdrew on Monday after police repressed an opposition demonstration on Saturday demanding the release of political prisoners.

The process of releasing them might begin this week and

there will not be anyone arrested after those 90 days,”

said businessman Jose Aguerri, a member of the opposition Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy (ACJD).

It is unknown, however, the number of demonstrators to be released, as the opposition announced today that there are 807, while the government has not yet given a figure.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will accompany the process of releases, according to the agreement reached in the day of talks this Wednesday between the parties at the headquarters of the Central American Institute of Business Administration (INCAE), to the south of Managua.

The parties agreed on a six-point negotiation agenda that will be addressed simultaneously with the release of the demonstrators. They also agreed to request support from the international community to implement the agreements reached, according to the joint statement distributed by the presidency.
