On January 20th the Government will allocate ¢165,275,000 for the payment of school salary.
126 billion colones from the total amout will be distributed among 146 thousand active public officials from the ministries (especially the Ministry of Public Education), the Legislature, the Judiciary, the Ombudsman’s office and the Comptroller General’s office.
In this regard, Helio Fallas, first Vice President and Finance Minister, said that everything is planned so that the workers receive the payment on time. Afterwards, many of them will be able to face the expenses of purchasing uniforms, supplies and pay for their children’s tuition.
The school salary is a part of their wages, and it is calculated monthly, to be paid in January of each year.
The amount corresponds to accrued gross wages (including extraordinary wages) from January 1st to December 31st of the previous year, multiplied by 8.23%, which virtually amounts to an average monthly salary received during that period.
Martha Cubillo, national treasurer, indicated that the necessary resources for this governmental commitment, come from the collection of taxes carried out in previous weeks.
Cubillo also emphasized that this extraordinary payment is exempt from income tax and the withholding of workers’ contributions in favor of the CCSS, embargoes and maintenance.
On Friday, the Ministry of Economy will reveal the results of the study on uniforms and school supplies prices.
