Government won’t take actions against invasion in Portillos Island

Costa Rica already filed a complaint with the International Court of Justice in The Hague due to the presence of a Nicaraguan military camp in Portillos Island.

According to Chancellor Alejandro Solano, before sending the complaint to the Court, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Manuel González, had sent a note to the Government of Nicaragua making the claim, but he was ignored.

Therefore, he decided to go to the international entity, but said that they will not take additional measures.

Nicaragua argues that the area where the camp was set up is not fenced, but Costa Rica is clear that the island is Costa Rican territory.

We hope that the Court establishes the delimitation, because that is Costa Rican land,”

said Solano.

The country hopes that the decision of the Court is given along with the decision on the complaint for the non-payment of a $6 million compensation for environmental damage caused in Calero Island.
