Group convicted for carrying ¢74 million worth of marijuana

A total sentence of 48 years in prison was handed down on Wednesday by the Criminal Court of Limón against 6 people linked with a substantial drug transport in Venecia de Matina.

The defendants were caught in November 2015 carrying 350 lbs of marijuana imported from Jamaica, valued at 74 million colones.

The trial began in October last year, when four men named Sáenz, Venegas, Montoya and Corrales, and two women named Ariza, were formally accused.

Apparently, they were going to the capital to market the drug in different places.

It is presumed that the leader of the criminal group was already behind bars at the time of the arrests.

During the indictment, the Public Prosecutor’s Office provided evidence that included the review of text messages and the intervention of telephone calls.
