On Wednesday, Guatemala confirmed the first cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome and also a case of microcephaly associated with Zika virus syndrome in a newborn. It was informed by the officials of Roosevelt Hospital, the largest in the capital.
We have a 70-year-old patient and a girl of five year old diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome. The first case of microcephaly related to Zika was also detected,
said at a press conference Carlos Mejía, head of the Hospital Clinic for Infectious Diseases in Guatemala City.
Mejía explained that they are testing other two babies that were born with microcephaly in the hospital, and there are suspicions that their mothers were infected with Zika during pregnancy.
Zika, like dengue and Chicungunya, is a viral disease transmitted by mosquito Aedes aegypti, which proliferates during the rainy season.
