On Saturday, dozens of Guatemalans took the streets in the capital to demand the resignation of President Jimmy Morales, linked to a new case of corruption in his election campaign in 2015.
Beating drums and shouting slogans against Morales, the protesters demanded the dismissal of the president accused by the prosecution of illicit electoral financing for the second time for not reporting almost one million dollars in campaign expenses.
Morales was bad as a comedian and worse as a president,”
said a teacher in front of the National Palace Rosario, recalling the artistic past of the president for which he is known among the population.
On Thursday, the prosecution and the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG), a body attached to the UN, revealed that important businessmen donated almost a million dollars to Morales’ party, the right-wing FCN-Nación, but both made a mockery of the law by not recording expenses in the finances of the group.
The money was used for the payment of FCN-Nación electoral prosecutors, but since they were not reported to the electoral authority, the crime of illicit electoral financing was committed.
The protest on Saturday also charged against the businessmen who admitted having illegally financed Morales’ campaign.
On Friday, Morales, rejected the accusations of corruption and attacked the prosecutor’s office, Cicig and the press.
