Health Ministry will restrict use of glyphosate in the country

The use of glyphosate will have new regulations and even restrictions for some sectors in the country.

This was announced by the Minister of Health, Daniel Salas, in the inter-institutional sessions in which they analyze the benefits and consequences of the herbicide. A new regulation has already been drafted and it will establish how and in which cases the chemical can be used.

Glyphosate is one of the most commonly used herbicides in Costa Rica, especially in rice, pineapple and certain vegetable crops, and it has been linked to the incidence of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in Guanacaste. It has also been linked to certain types of cancer worldwide.

The inter-institutional work unit is made up of the Ministries of Health, Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) and Environment and Energy (MINAE).
