Historic transplant weekend

This weekend four hospitals of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) participated in a surgical task without precedents: they performed 10 transplants of organs and tissues.

The alert began on Friday night in Mexico Hospital, when the presence of two possible donors was reported.

HNN and Calderón Hospital’s team network was activated to perform emergency, surgical procedures to patients who needed them the most.

Within hours the teams of Mexico, Calderón and National Children’s hospitals already had everything ready to start the surgical journey that ended on Saturday.

Doctor performed two liver transplants (one at Children’s Hospital and one at Calderón Hospital), four kidney transplants (Mexico Hospital) and two cornea transplant (Eye Clinic).

According to Dr. Rosa Hurtado, Donations manager from Mexico Hospital, all patients are stable to this date.

The CCSS highlighted the coordination between hospitals and the commitment of their staff.

For example, the anesthesiologist of the transplant team from Calderón Guardia Hospital suspended his vacations to participate in the liver transplant surgery, and the surgeons who participated in the removal of organs in Mexico Hospital were the ones on call, so they also had to meet the normal surgeries that were reported as emergencies.
