On Sunday night, President Juan Orlando Hernández was declared the winner of the controversial elections in Honduras by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE). In the midst of the announcement, the opposition reported that it plans to resume protests in the streets to denounce fraud.
The re-elected president for the four-year term 2018-2022 is the citizen Juan Orlando Hernández Alvarado,”
said TSE president David Matamoros, three weeks after the elections concluded, which had a bumpy and discussed scrutiny.
The announcement came hours after the candidate of the Alliance Against the Dictatorship, Salvador Nasralla, traveled to Washington to present arguments about the alleged electoral fraud before the Organization of American States (OAS) and the US State Department.
A day before this announcement, the president’s sister, Hilda Hernández, died in an accident when a military helicopter crashed.
Juan Orlando Hernández , 49, nominated by the right-wing National Party, obtained 42.95% of the votes against 41.24% of Nasralla , a popular television presenter of 64 years, according to data presented on Sunday by the TSE.
