Hotels want to change school calendars

Gustavo Araya, president of the Cámara Costarricense de Hoteles (CCH) declared they will propose to change school break season to reduce the huge difference between the peak season and the offseason.

“By doing this, national tourism would grow because people would also visit touristic areas in low season; it would mean better and cheaper prices,”

Araya assured.

The CCH is aware of the difficulties of changing the school calendar, but they believe it’s not impossible. Their proposal is to move the end of the school year to September and to keep the short break period (March to April).

They expect to balance business and tourism in the most visited areas: beaches and mountains and those hotels located in La Gran Area Metropolitana expect to increase religious, cultural and bird watching tourism.

They haven’t presented the proposal to the Ministry of State Education (MEP), though. Despite having discussed the proposal with the Instituto Costarricense de Turimos (ICT), minister Wilhelm von Breymann’s last year resignation has affected the process. It is important to remember that when Von Breymann resigned, the president of the CCH told the reporters he felt a lack of commitment on his part.

Ricardo Molina, president of the Asociación de Profesores de Segunda Enseñanza, said that his team supported the initiative, but it had to be deeply studied because it musn’t affect anyone, neither students, nor professors.

“All parts must be benefited.”
