ICE
A herd of endangered mountain pigs (Tayassu pecari) was first documented in the Las Pailas II geothermal project in Liberia.
The ICE is monitoring wildlife in the area through trap cameras.
These animals are protected and regulated by the Wildlife Conservation Act and the Organic Law of the Environment. Only the specimens of Pecari tajacu had been identified before.
In the past, mountain pigs were located in habitats available throughout the country, but today its distribution has decreased by 89%, according to historical data.
Trap cameras are the ideal method for the study of evasive varieties in danger of extinction, since it is unlikely to see them by walking in the area.
Large species such as tapirs and white tail deer, as well as smaller mammals have been identified by this project.
