On Friday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), based in The Hague, Netherlands, will read the sentences of three lawsuits filed by Costa Rica against Nicaragua. This was announced by Foreign Minister Manuel González, who said that these are three complex issues.
The ICJ will have to define the amount of compensation that Nicaragua must pay to Costa Rica for environmental damage in Isla Portillos, as a consequence of illicit activities, including military occupation, which occurred in that sector in 2010.
The second issue refers to the legal actions that the country undertook on February 25th, 2014 for the Court to establish maritime borders between both countries in the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
The lawsuit was filed after Nicaragua publicized, in 2013, maps in which it offered blocks for the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons in the waters of both seas that are part of Costa Rica.
The last issue is due to the installation of a Nicaraguan military camp on a strip of Costa Rican beach that is part of Portillos, as documented in a flyby made at the end of 2016.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs said that Costa Rica has had a magnificent legal representation, made up of national and international experts and that it has had the support of numerous institutions, and he also indicated that the Government of Costa Rica will respect the decisions of the ICJ, regardless of the results.
