Illegal gold miners caught in Corcovado National Park

Four suspects of illegally extracting gold were arrested on Tuesday in the Corcovado National Park on the Osa Peninsula.

Officials of the Border Police of the Ministry of Public Security, along with park rangers of the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) integrated patrols to cover a sector located in a place known as Túneles Pelusa, usually attacked by unscrupulous people in search of gold and other riches, causing serious damage in Corcovado.

The officers caught Costa Ricans named Estrada, Gamboa, Sánchez and Segura red-handed, the latter being required by the court for aggravated robbery.

According to police reports, these men had in their possession various tools used for the illegal extraction of gold. In fact, 4.82 grams of that type of mineral were confiscated.
