The National Meteorological Institute (IMN) reported that in the North Pacific it rained 35% more than the average for this rainy season, between March and October.
These conditions were caused by the impact of climatic phenomena, such as tropical storm Nate. That increase of 35% translates into 510 millimeters (mm) of rainwater.
In other areas, such as the Central Valley or the Central Pacific, there were also increases in the percentage of rainfall well above the average (20% and 25%, respectively).
Juan Carlos Fallas, director of the IMN, explained that according to a total average, this has been the wettest year of the last five years. However, this does not mean it’s the wettest year in all of history.
In contrast, at a general level, the North Caribbean and the South Caribbean experienced a considerable decrease in rainfall. For example, in the first region, it rained 50% less than usual.
The transition from the rainy to the dry season has already begun. However, these conditions of change have occurred very slowly.
