IMN alerts about the proximity of tropical waves

The hurricane season officially started in the Atlantic Ocean on June 1st. Authorities are alert due to the possible arrival of tropical waves in the country.

Since May 20th, four tropical waves have formed, the first dissipated but three more are expected to reach the Caribbean Sea, which could generate very intense rains in Costa Rica, according to Luis Fernando Alvarado from the National Meteorological Institute (IMN).

According to Alvarado, the strongest waves generated in the months of June, July and August have the potential to reach Costa Rica and even develop into hurricanes. The statistics indicate that 85% of the intense hurricanes that occur in the Atlantic are caused by tropical waves.
