“Our seas start here.” With this motto, the Municipality of Desamparados makes a call to preserve the seas of the country.

This is a campaign that will paint 100 culverts throughout the canton with marine animals and messages so that people don’t throw waste in the streets.

The initiative aims to educate the population about the importance of preserving the environment and the beautiful beaches of Costa Rica. Gilberth Jiménez, mayor of Desamparados, said it is a way to contribute to the education of the citizens.

Although in Desamparados we do not have seas, we do have rivers, and everything we throw into the streets, reaches the sewers, then the rivers and finally the seas,”

stated Jiménez.

The campaign was launched on Friday with the participation of more than 300 children from kinder garden María Jiménez, located in downtown Desamparados.

The Public Services Unit of the Municipality collects more than 200 tons of waste per month from the streets and sewers of the canton.
