The Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (AyA) performs an inspection on the Siquirres River, as an intentional diesel spill would have occurred.
The operations are carried out in conjunction with officials of the Costa Rican Petroleum Refinery (Recope) and the Asada del Coco-Moravia. It is unknown who could have caused the situation that affects 30 thousand people.
At the moment, the treatment plant is kept closed for prevention.
“It was timely to place absorbent material and containment lines to collect the spilled product. Preventively, Acueductos y Alcantarillados suspended the operation of the potable water treatment plant located in Siquirres, until it is sure there is no impact on the soils and residues of the hydrocarbon,”
said the entity.
The Siquirres River feeds the AyA plant that supplies a large part of that Limonense canton and the ASADA Coco – Moravia.
AyA called on the affected population to stay informed through official channels.
