Irazú Lake increased one meter in 30 days

In a matter of one month, the Irazú volcanic lake increased its level by one meter. The body of water, which reappeared in October 2017 after seven years of absence, is one of the main attractions of this colossus.

Currently, the lake has is seven meters deep and it has an estimated water volume of 190 × 160 liters.

The cold lagoon, as it is popularly known for its temperature, reappeared through the prevailing rainy conditions in the second half of last year.

In the course of one month, between January and February 2018, the level of the lake increased by one meter. At present, no thermal anomalies or significant gas emissions are observed in the bottom of the crater or in the lake. The lake has a bright green color,”

reported the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI), through an official publication.

The vulcanologist Javier Pacheco, from the OVSICORI, explained a few months ago that the lagoons appear because of the waterproofing effect of the ash.

At the beginning of the previous decade the lagoon reached up to 30 meters deep. However, in 2005 it began to dry up and the disappearance was completed in 2010.
