Irreparable damage: femicides have resulted in 11 orphans

The femicides that have occurred this year have resulted in 14 orphans, 11 of which are minors with ages ranging from 8 months old to 14 years old.

This follows from a compilation made by the Observatory on Gender Violence against Women and the Access to Justice of the Judiciary. The institution indicated that, until June 20th, six of the murders were committed by the victim’s former partner.

The most recent case is that of Grettel Solano Solano, 33, who was murdered by her partner in the early hours of Monday morning in Belén de Heredia. Apparently, the crime was preceded by an argument between the two of them. The woman received a knife wound in the neck and died in the hospital.

Of the 11 orphaned minors, nine are girls. Another striking fact indicates that femicide has not yet occurred in the province of San José. On the other hand, Puntarenas has had three and Alajuela two.

Unfortunately, the more denounced gender violence, the more the reactions of machismo. Hence, the importance of empowering ourselves and creating networks of help and support at all levels, not just from the government,”

said the observatory.

According to the agency, the fight against these crimes must be a ‘national cause’ and a responsibility of the different groups that make up the society.

The problem is that many people still think it is not their business, but it is,”

said the entity.
