Legislative vote annulled over black and white spheres

The intervention of two legislators from Limón prevented a vote with black and white spheres to decide if a motion of censorship against the minister of Education Edgar Mora was approved on Thursday night.

Eduardo Cruickshank and David Gourzonk protested at the time the legislators were called to vote, which establishes the black spheres as a negative vote. They argued that the black color is linked with derogatory aspects.

Instead, the president of the Legislative Assembly decided to change the method to “yes” and “no” ballots.

The incident came a day after Cruickshank reprimanded Citizen Action representative Welmer Ramos in a legislative committee for speaking about blacklists, referring to a risky financial condition in the country.

This regulation has been standing for 56 years. It is urgent that we make a decision to change and adapt this instrument to reality,”

said legislative president Carolina Hidalgo.
