Legislator: “Chancellery should not comment on our travels”

Legislator José Alberto Alfaro, from the Libertarian Movement, told the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that the Chancellor should not comment on their travels, even if he believes the legislator’s trip to Nicaragua is inconvenient.

Alfaro, vice president of the Legislative Assembly and organizer of the trip, said that

no one can tell me what is convenient or not, only the people who elected me.”

In a reply to a query from the press, the Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that

the institution believes this trip to Nicaragua is not favorable, much less at a time when bilateral relations are not completely fluid and when the trial for the maritime delimitation between the two countries at the International Court of Justice in The Hague is still pending.”

However, the Chancellor clarified that he respects the division of powers.

The purpose of the trip, to be held on November 18th to 20th in Managua, aims for a meeting between a group of Costa Rican legislators and Nicaraguan parliamentarians.

The tour is financed by the National Assembly of Nicaragua, controlled by the Frente Sandinista para Liberación Nacional (FSLN), and the Central American and Caribbean Presidential Forum of Presidents of Legislative Powers (FOPREL).

The Chancellor knows that he must respect the principle of separation of powers. I do not tell him if he has to goes to Brazil, or the UN, Cuba or Russia, I do not go with him or the President,”

said Alfaro.

The legislator also said that the trip does not obey diplomatic, but interparliamentary relations and ruled that the trip is seen as a gesture to legitimize the regime of Daniel Ortega, reelected last Sunday.
