Mario Redondo, legislator from the Christian Democratic Alliance party, questioned the simplicity of the studies conducted to free 209 prisoners from jail Gerardo Rodríguez, located in San Rafael de Alajuela.
According to the legislator, the assessment to place the prisoners in the semi-institutional regime were made in just 7 weeks. However, according to experts in criminology, a proper study for a single inmate requires at least two months.
Redondo made these claims based on a report by Alexander Obando, director of the National Institute of Criminology. According to the report, the assessments were conducted by a team of just one lawyer, one social worker, one counselor and prison guards, but there were no details on the participation of specialists in criminology.
Out of the 209 cases, 118 were convictions for property crimes and 86 for drug trafficking.
Redondo believes this is an attestation of how desperate they are to deal with overcrowding.
