Zoila Volio, from the National Integration Party (PIN), proposed planting trees as a requirement to graduate from any university.
The legislator presented a bill that establishes that students who opt for any undergraduate or graduate degree in public and private universities must plant 10 trees as a graduation requirement. She explained that her initiative is part of the country’s goal of increasing forest cover to 60% to consolidate biological corridors and increase the availability of green areas for recreation.
According to data from the State of the Nation, between 2012 and 2017 an annual average of 46,800 titles of higher education were delivered. Using that average we could calculate that if each graduate plants 10 trees, we would have 468,000 new trees every year,”
