Ivonne Acuña, from National Restoration, introduced a bill to repeal articles 93, 113, and 120 of the Criminal Code, which – in her opinion – open the way for abortions.
In 1970, when this code was promulgated, these crimes were considered “dishonoring” if
-The abortion was committed to hide the dishonor of the woman
-The mother wanted to hide her dishonor by giving death to her child within three days after birth
-Anyone caused an abortion to save their own honor or their ascendant or descendant by blood or sister’s honor.
The congresswoman thinks it’s unacceptable that these situations are legal in the 21st century, because they serve as a perverse incentive, since the punishment imposed is inferior to the one imposed on the attack on a human life in its most vulnerable stage.
Acuña assures that the project she is proposing
seeks to harmonize the Criminal Code with the provisions of the Political Constitution and International Law already in force in Costa Rica, which, regardless of any ideological or political subjectivity, pose human life as the supreme value and order its broader legal protection during the special state of vulnerability and helplessness.”
Acuña believes this violent and chauvinistic model must be eliminated. “There is no honor in ending the life of a boy or girl,” concluded the woman.
