Legislators to investigate state responsibility in murder of indigenous leader

Legislators of the Human Rights Commission will investigate the responsibility of the State in the murder of the indigenous leader, Sergio Rojas. He was killed on March 18th at night, after he was shot at least six times on his back.

The motion to open that investigation was approved this Tuesday in the legislative forum, following the proposal of legislator José María Villalta from Frente Amplio.

María Vita Monge, from the Social Christian Unity Party (PUSC), the official Enrique Sánchez, voted in favor of Jorge Fonseca of the National Liberation Party (PLN) and Dragos Dolanescu from the Social Christian Republican Party.

Against this were Patricia Villegas from the National Integration Party (PIN) and Carmen Chan , independent legislator, although they both approved a motion for a minute of silence on Tuesday, March 19th in Plenary.

Villalta also proposed that in the same investigation, the actions taken in protection of the indigenous bodies Teribe and Bribri de Salitre be analyzed, according to the provisions of resolution 16/15 of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, with precautionary measure number 321-12 of April 30th, 2015.

Rojas had this a measure of protection after a series of threats to his life. Carlos Alvarado, president of the Republic, defended last week that within the framework of the the IACHR

“after the 911 alert, the Ministry of Security activated the protocol agreed with the community and the personnel of the Public Force went there immediately.”

The president said that he ordered the Ministry of Public Security (MSP) to give all necessary support to the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) to find those responsible for the murder and provide protection to the relatives of the indigenous leader.
