Longer government periods would be useless without other reforms

A group of 17 legislators from 5 political parties made a proposal for the congress, the president, vice-presidents, mayors, aldermen and syndics to be elected for 5 years.

The reasoning behind the proposal is that four years is a very short time to develop plans, strategies and public policies.

However, some argue that extending government’s periods to 5 years is useless if other reforms the country needs aren’t made, because this does not solve the underlying problems the country is facing.

The opposing legislators think that if the president’s term is to be extended, it’s necessary to establish a mechanism to revoke his mandate first.
