Man died after 20 hours of efforts to save him from embankment

Minor Pérez resisted 20 hours underground, buried by an embankment that kept the country following every minute of the rescue operation. However, the man lost the battle on Monday afternoon in the hospital.

Minor died of the injuries he suffered last Friday, when tons of dirt landed on the bulldozer he used to work in a pit in La Garita de Alajuela. This was confirmed by Susana Saravia, from Mexico Hospital.

On Sunday, the doctors had to amputate both legs up to his knees, but he also had a damaged kidney.

Authorities began rescue work on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and completed it at noon on Saturday.

Pérez, 49, was rescued by officials from the Red Cross and the Fire Brigade, who transferred him to Mexico Hospital via land.

Nobody could believe he was alive after all those hours and all the weight fell on him. During the rescue, he was able to talk to his wife twice.
