Many Costa Ricans have bad credit records

Due to arrears or the avoiding of their credits payments, more than 66,000 Costa Ricans are listed as bad credit holders within the national territory.

Usually, those listed as debtors in the Central Credit Information (CIC) of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (SUGEF) have greater difficulty to get new credits, since individual reports of credit operations are generated every four years.

Among other reasons, a person could be listed like such when a guarantee served as payment is declared uncollectible by the financial institution or if the debt payment was made under judicial order.

However, the General Superintendent pointed out that the decision to grant a loan depends on each financial institution, that base its decisions on its internal policies.
