Mass fish death reported in Limón

On Wednesday, the Ecological Federation (FECON) reported the massive death of fish in Laguna Madre de Dios, located in Batán de Limón and associated with the Tortuguero canals.

According to the organization for the conservation and study of the environment, last weekend it received reports from neighbors, fishermen and tour operators who warned about a large number of dead fish in the water.

Mauricio Álvarez, president of FECON, told the media they believe the use of agrochemicals for the sowing of some crops such as pineapple and rice could have contaminated the water source and caused the death of animals.

There is a lot of effort to test and determine who uses it (agrochemical). For example, even though we identify the agrochemical, who will we hold accountable? (…) We can only make a public complaint,”

Álvarez told the media.

The president of the Federation said that environmental groups have grown increasingly concerned in recent years, as the government has opened the door to other chemicals that could be highly dangerous for some species, both marine and terrestrial.

Some of the animal remains were sent to the National University of Costa Rica (UNA) for the proper chemical analysis.

The Costa Rica Fishing organization, dedicated to providing information on sport fishing, also denounced the massive death of fish in this lagoon.
